The Problem

We observed an overpopulation of free roaming dogs and cats in the Bahamas and the need to educate and increase the understanding of the community, especially in low income areas, on animal welfare and responsible pet ownership. Operation Potcake, a collaboration of the Bahamas Humane Society, Baark! and Animal Balance, was created to humanely and compassionately spay, neuter and vaccinate free roaming dog and cat population during an 8 day event. We saw an opportunity, in conjunction with this event, to host interactive, hands-on educational programs focusing on children, with volunteers from local schools to increase the visibility and understanding of spaying, neutering and vaccinating which fosters compassion, respect and kindness for generations to come.

Our Plan

Host educational programs at the Operation Potcake locations where curious children will be engaged by student and adult volunteers entertaining and teaching using multi-age level interactive make-and-take lessons and games. Each area has stations with hands-on learning projects about dog and cats bodies, safety and care of animals, animal welfare and the importance of neutering/spaying. We will also supply local after-care programs with these same projects for in class activities as well as take home projects for extended learning. An in-class educational program has also been developed and volunteers will present individually throughout the year.
