The Problem

In our community, we've noticed that students frequently disregard the distinctions between trash cans and recycling bins. As a result, many easily recyclable items, such as plastic bottles, are thrown in the trash.

Our Plan

Our wish for this project is to make as large of an impact as we can in our small community by educating students and encouraging them to recycle, while contributing to reforestation efforts in vulnerable nations. Our project will be to run a drive to collect plastic water bottles from around the school and use the proceeds to fund the planting of trees through the organization One Tree Planted.

Here is how the project went:

As a result of this project, we were able to collect over 1,400 bottles and fund the planting of over 70 trees!

Through this project I/we learned:

We learned how much waste people at the school produce, and how much of this waste can be easily avoided through the use of recycling.

What I/we might change:

We would involve more members of the student community and try to expand the scope of the bottle collection. We would also take more measures to prevent the bottle collection bins from being contaminated.

My/our favorite part of this project was:

It was very rewarding to finally exchange the bottles and to donate the money we gained.

Some tips, tricks or fun facts about the project:

There are likely a lot of recyclable bottles being thrown away at a given school or public building. Simply by collecting them, one can raise a solid amount of money.
