The Problem

Problems We Aim to Solve through Wow! That’s STEM: 1. Limited Access to STEM Opportunities Many youth—especially in underrepresented communities—still lack access to hands-on, engaging STEM learning experiences outside the classroom. 2. Persistent Gaps in STEM Access Disparities in resources and opportunities continue to limit exposure to science, technology, engineering, and math for students in underserved areas. 3. Generational STEM Anxiety Many parents shy away from math and science, unintentionally passing down a fear or lack of confidence in these subjects to the next generation. 4. Lack of Early Confidence-Building Experiences Without supportive and fun early STEM experiences, children often fail to see their potential to succeed in these fields. 5. Insufficient Community-Based STEM Programs There is a shortage of accessible, after-school STEM programming in youth groups like the YMCA, Boys & Girls Club, and local elementary schools—especially in underrepresented communities.

Our Plan

1. Expand Access to Hands-On STEM Learning Goal: Reach more youth in underrepresented communities through engaging, hands-on STEM experiences following a For kids By kids model Actions: • Partner with youth organizations such as the YMCA, Boys & Girls Club, and local elementary schools to offer free or low-cost after-school STEM programs. • Develop and deliver interactive STEM kits and workshop curricula designed to make complex concepts fun and approachable. • Train high school volunteers and mentors to lead workshops, creating for kids by kids learning model that builds connection and confidence. 2. Build Confidence and Positive Attitudes Toward STEM Goal: Help students overcome fear and self-doubt in math and science. Actions: • Create safe, supportive, and fun learning environments that celebrate experimentation and failure as part of the learning process. • Design workshops that connect STEM to real-world problems students care about, helping them see relevance and possibility. • Recognize and celebrate student progress through small achievements, certificates, and mentorship highlights. 3. Break the Cycle of STEM Anxiety Among Families Goal: Encourage parents to engage positively with their children’s STEM learning. Actions: • Offer friendly “Family STEM Nights” to make math and science approachable and enjoyable. • Share simple at-home STEM activities and resources to build confidence in learning together. • Highlight diverse role models in STEM to show that success is possible for anyone, from any background. 4. Sustain and Grow a Youth-Led Movement Goal: Empower students to lead, innovate, and expand Wow! That’s STEM in their own communities. Actions: • Develop committees focused on workshop design, outreach, mentorship, and social media to give members leadership opportunities. • Provide training for volunteers in communication, teaching, and inclusive STEM education. • Launch “STEM Ambassadors” programs to help students start Wow! That’s STEM chapters at their own schools or community. 5. Measure Impact and Continuously Improve Goal: Ensure programs are effective and responsive to community needs. Actions: • Collect participant feedback after every workshop to improve content and delivery. • Track program reach (number of workshops, students served, and partner sites). • Highlight impact stories to inspire new partnerships and volunteers.
