The Problem

The reduction of green spaces and deforestation due to residential and commercial growth.

Our Plan

This project will support the environment and reduce climate change. We live in a suburban area that has had exponential growth. Unfortunately, green spaces have and continue to be replaced with large single home communities, multi-family residential units and commercial buildings. Trees are vital to creating a carbon neutral environment. We want to raise children to appreciate the many benefits that trees provide and also feel like they have the power to support their community's natural resources. Will guide a kindergarten class through the I Dream of Green Project-in-a-Box. For step 1, we will do the compassionate self and group assessments. We will explore the question, "why are trees important" and discuss the terms "green space", "carbon neutral" and greenhouse gas". We will be restricted to their school campus but will complete a community map of the campus per the R&S Mapping for Young Children activity. We have permission to plant a tree near the school garden. Using https://www.audubon.org/native-plants we will let the children choose a native tree to plant. We will enlist parent volunteers to assist with the planting of the tree. The children will create a tree care plan. As a supplementary activity, we will do the "Creature Hero Project - Hummingbird Feeder" with the students for them to bring home and place in their own backyard.
