The Problem

The problem our students want to work on finding a solution to this year is the amount of food we waste as a school. So much food is thrown out by students everyday and taken to the landfill. My students did a waste data collection where they went through the trash at school and counted how many recyclables, compost, trash and donation item there were. They were surprised by the amount of unopened or uneaten food items that were thrown away. They were also shocked at how many recyclables are thrown away. This fall semester we are going to focus on getting a donation system set up at our school and a compost system. Students will design an effective way to collect unwanted food items from students. For the compost system, we will collect organic food scraps to put in a worm bin to make soil! I believe these projects will help the students be leaders in the school and help educate the rest of the school on waste reduction. Students will be turning the compost and see it become soil! Then we will use the compost to add nutrients back into our gardens.

Our Plan

We have discussion with our lunch ladies to get approval for our donation boxes, then we will put a few brightly colored boxes scattered throughout the lunch area on tables. We will write what things can be donated in the boxes, then we will set up a partnership with an organization who would love to receive donated food. For the compost, we will set up a worm bin, get the brown materials and collect the greens from students at lunch. We will have a compost collection right next to the trash bin for students to put their organic food scraps. Then each day students will collect the food and put it in the worm bin. We will know if our campaign is successful if we reduce the amount of trash that leaves our school. We will collect data weekly on how many items were donated and how much compostable items were collected. Students will analyze that data and determine how successful we were.
