The Problem
Our campus is kinda boring and dry in some areas and we don’t have enough plants/green space. There’s not a lot of stuff for butterflies and bees, and some spots outside are SUPER hot with barely any shade. Also, people throw trash everywhere or put trash in the recycling because the bins are confusing. And most people don’t even realize that storm drains go straight to the ocean, so if we litter, it can end up in the water.
Our Plan
We’re doing a Campus Eco-Upgrade Build (basically making the school better + greener) with 4 parts: Pollinators (Butterfly Garden / Habitat Upgrade) We’re going to plant a butterfly/pollinator garden (planters + flowers that attract butterflies/bees) and put up a small sign that explains what the plants are for and how pollinators help. Climate Change (Heat/Shade Hot Spot Map + Fixes) We’re going to make a campus hot spot map by checking which areas are hottest (using temps or counting shade). Then we’ll pick the worst spots and propose 3 ways to fix it (more plants, shade, trees if possible, or better shaded seating areas). Water Pollution & Conservation (Storm Drain → Ocean) We’re putting signs near storm drains that say stuff like “Only Rain Down the Drain” and we’ll do a simple demo to show how trash and pollution can travel from school → storm drain → ocean. Recycle (Posters + Campus Campaign) We’re making recycling posters that show what goes in recycling vs trash (simple pictures, no long paragraphs). Then we’ll do a quick campus campaign (posters + announcements + a challenge/pledge) to get people to actually recycle right and stop mixing trash into recycling.
