The Problem

Our hope is that if we get kids interested in composting, they will become life long composters and that they will see that we can all make a difference in small and large ways even in the way we approach our everyday lives. We hope that composting will reduce the amount of food waste in our school and that it will inspire kids to continue to make a difference!

Our Plan

We are worried about food waste, and so we are going to pilot a compost program in one of the classrooms in our elementary school. Students will have an outdoor compost bin, but they will also have a smaller bin class to collect things like apple cores, banana peels, etc. Students will learn about the science and beneficial factors behind composting and will observe results such as decrease in classroom trash. Students will then work to educate the student body and then hopefully implement a school-wide composting policy. Students will learn about vermicomposting and educate others too!
