The Problem

We are choosing junk journaling as our 'Unearth A Story' project for the main Summer Reading Program activity this summer. We have noticed that children who have grown up in the COVID-19 era have a lot of anxiety and will often have very high expectations of themselves. We believe that allowing them the freedom to junk journal however and whatever they like will be healing and help alleviate some of these anxieties. In addition to the 4 key areas our project will address, this project will also address literacy, arts, zero waste, mindfulness, healing and social-emotional growth. We love junk journaling for this summer's project because it is freeing - nothing has to be perfect, there are no wrong ways to do it and there are very few rules to junk journaling.

Our Plan

We will offer have junk journal sessions on a regular basis throughout the summer to accommodate everyone's schedules as well as one big junk journaling day on Saturday July 18. We will also host other programs related to the Unearth A Story theme. We will have weekly story times about different species of animals. We will have "Restivals"~ evening opportunities to unwind, be screen-free, and practice mindfulness. We will be making handmade paper, as papermaking is a large part of Corinth's history as a former paper mill town. We will be hosting local musicians throughout the month of August who have developed engaging programs that center on the theme "Unearth a Story".
