The Problem

We have a waste problem in the United States. According to EPA data, 1.5 million tons of textile waste (from towels, sheets, and pillowcases) is generated annually, and only 16% is recycled. As I researched this and talked with shelters, I realized that many usable towels are being thrown away by businesses while shelters are always asking for towel donations. I want to connect waste to need, by creating a simple local reuse system that reduces towel waste, keeps materials in use longer, and helps animals.

Our Plan

I'm creating a local towel reuse system that connects businesses with extra towels to animal organizations that can use them. I'll continue reaching out to community partners, organize towel collection and deliveries, and recruit other youth volunteers through my local public library's Teen Council to help with sorting, outreach, and community education. By working together, we can keep more towels out of landfills while helping organizations that care for animals.
