The Problem

We hope to help make the North Fork Shenandoah River a less nutrient-rich river. We will be studying and collecting data on the water quality of the North Fork Shenandoah River. The river has been reported to have water quality problems and we want to see what can be done to help.

Our Plan

The North Fork Shenandoah River has sections where it is impaired: This means it has water quality problems. We live in an agricultural area, so the farms have a significant impact on the watershed. Many of the farms do not have fencing along the rivers. We intend to help inform the community of the importance of protecting the river. We will be conducting water quality testing at three sites along the North Fork Shenandoah River, and three sites along Smith Creek which is a tributary of the North Fork Shenandoah. We will share these results with the community through media and a Google Earth overlay. This data will be available to the public sometime this summer. We also plan to raise awareness of the issues with the river and participate with the NPO Friends of the North Fork of the Shenandoah River in being a voice for the river. We will participate in a Family Fun Day on the river as a new state park is being planned along the seven bends of the river in Shenandoah County, Virginia.
