The Problem

Our goal was to have students and staff donate as much food as was possible. We had the different grade levels compete against each other to see who could donate the most food, in pounds. I asked our district's program, which benefits our homeless student population, which foods they needed most. We then asked students to donate the foods that weighed the most, though they could donate any food item they wanted.

Our Plan

We gave students and staff a 2-week period in which to donate food. This allowed the momentum to build quickly, and students could see the progress of our "competition" as food items quickly piled up. We set up boxes to mimic bar graphs. The more food that was donated, the higher up the "bars" would extend.
