The Problem

Our project will address the problem of sustainibility and growing vegetables and plants in our community garden. Students have not been able to help the school garden due to the pandemic. We want to create an irrigation system and plant native plants that will attract pollinators and in turn help sustain our vegetables. We are working on engineering a rain barrel irrigation system and also observing and growing a compost system with our redworms. We have started growing in our classroom and will soon be ready to move the plants to the garden.

Our Plan

Students took photos and described what improvements they wanted to improve. We began with cleaning up and weeding, removing trash and plastic. We formed groups that will work on composting, growing plants, painting and refurbishing, and engineering the irrigation system. We will be monitoring these through our science fair experimental designs for our science fair coming up at the end of May where students will completely design, carry out and complete evaluations of their projects in class.
