The Problem

Our first-grade students noticed that our school does not have recycling bins around campus. This has become more of an issue this year because all students have been given access to small plastic water bottles. This is due to COVID protocols that make drinking from water fountains difficult.

Our Plan

While we are grateful for having the water bottles since many of our kids don't bring reusable bottles, we hate the thought of many of the plastic bottles not being recycled because there are no bins for students to easily recycle the bottles. We want to put out colorful bins to alleviate this need. This student group will create art to let other students and staff know that bins are now available. They will also put artwork that encourages bringing their own water bottles. We will be able to know if this is successful by checking the bins and recycling the bottles as a group. Also, if more students are bringing their own bottles, we will know because the usage of plastic bottles will go down as well and we will know by how many packages of water bottles we need to buy as a school.
