The Problem

We have an amazing nature trail beside our school that we use to enhance student learning through the use of the world around us. Our nature trail used to have a forest of beautiful spruce trees around it. The Spruce Beetle has killed all those trees and they had to be taken out. We have started a restoration project on our trail and would like to add more trees to replace those that were killed and taken out. After researching, we selected trees that will do well in our environment. We will be learning about ecosystems and how things affect them as part of this project. Before we plant our trees, we will talk about the effect of the beetles on the forest ecosystem and how that in turn effects the creatures and other plants that live there. When we plant the trees, we will teach students the benefits of trees in the world around us. We will talk about how restoring the trees will change the environment of our beloved nature trail. Students will also learn what plants need to grow and thrive.

Our Plan

This project will be a shared endeavor at our school. All students and staff will participate by helping plant and care for the trees on the nature trail. The Community Service Committee will engage the whole school in activities that will build knowledge and encourage ownership of the care of the trees.
