The Problem

STEM You Can! is a youth-led nonprofit organization that provides free STEM summer camps for rising 4th-6th grade girls to spark their interest in science. We hope to show young girls that STEM subjects are fun, creative, and collaborative by performing hands-on experiments to explore areas including engineering, chemistry, and astronomy.

Our Plan

STEM careers are rapidly growing in today's world, but boys are three times more likely to pursue STEM careers than girls. STEM You Can! is a youth-led nonprofit organization that provides free STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) summer camps for elementary and middle school girls (4th-6th grade) to spark their interest in science. We want to show girls that science and engineering fields are not only meant for boys and that they can pursue these careers as well, if they continue showing interest and work towards these goals. Our goal is not to discourage boys from pursuing scientific knowledge, rather to encourage young girls to do so. We hope to show young girls that science is fun and exciting by performing hands-on experiments to explore areas such as engineering, chemistry, astronomy, and biology. The activities we include in the camp promote teamwork and show the girls that science is creative and collaborative. Some of these activities included building towers, making slime, and creating edible terrariums. This program began in New Jersey and is currently running in 14 other states. This program began in Louisville, Kentucky four years ago, and last summer we expanded to Lexington and Prestonsburg, KY as well. The program was a success and the girls really enjoyed it, so this summer, we are excited to announce that we are running another camp in Louisville!
