Hunger in our community
Increasing food rescue efforts to feed food insecure individuals in our community
The project went very well. We had a group of MS/HS teens that helped distribute rescued food on Tuesdays 1x/month. Our group sorted and set up tables of food for the families to choose from. Doing it this way rather than packing the bags for the helped reduce food waste because families only took the foods they enjoyed.
Through this project we learned how to work with one another and how to treat the families with kindness and respect.
If we did this project again I would change it by having families sign up to receive food ahead of time. This would ensure that we could distribute the food fairly to all attending.
My favorite part of this project was meeting all the little children.
One thing that put all the families at ease was smiling at them and saying hello and goodbye. Some families might feel ashamed about coming to get food and we found that talking to them was helpful in breaking the ice.
