The Problem

Disconnecting from the everyday rat race of work/school, electronics (tv/tablets) mixed between convenient unhealthy food choices. Knowing where our food comes from and the loss of nutrition during traditional food supply chains..

Our Plan

We are planning to build a Seed Library as an extension from our Elementary School's Garden Club into our local community through our Rotary Club and Community Garden. This will be a place community members can access and exchange seasonally appropriate seeds with local educational resources inspiring curiosity while fostering confidence and environmental responsibility.

Here is how the project went:

Smoothly! The students enjoyed mapping out the seed library's best placement in our community to make the biggest impact. They loved that their art teacher gave it the finishing touches... their favorite part was being highlighted in our community newspaper.

Through this project I/we learned:

It takes a village! The amount of people who made this possible, starting with the grant, students planning, identifying a local carpenter to keep the money in the community, our art teacher for painting, an engineer neighbor who installed it, a local Target who donated the seeds and our community paper for covering it. Placing it at our Community Garden has also brought awareness to people who didn't even realize we had a community garden!

What I/we might change:

It ended up being slightly more expensive than anticipated but I was able to use our family funds to cover.

My/our favorite part of this project was:

Seeing the community come together to make it happen and seeing our community celebrate it after.

Some tips, tricks or fun facts about the project:

Ensure you use proper pressure treated wood if placing outside and ensure you set a reminder to seal it every 6 months.
