The Problem

Our school would like to start off a school garden and composting program on our campus because we see a lot of food waste going on and we are also located in a food desert and would like to be able to provide students and families with fresh food. Additionally starting a school garden provides students with an opportunity to learn biology and other sciences hands on, as well as draw on the funds of knowledge of their parents, many of whom are immigrants and have knowledge that can be expertly applied in such a project.

Our Plan

We will build a large compost bin and at least one large garden planter and grow fruit and vegetable crops, herbs, medicinal herbs, and native plants to attract pollinators. We will use the garden to reduce food waste, provide healthy food, take the opportunity to learn from our students' families traditional knowledge, and use the opportunity to learn chemistry, biology, and health in the field.
