The Problem

The small grove near my neighborhood has been cleared to make way for a Whole Foods, a grocery store known for its organic food. However, while organic food for people will be readily available, the natural "grocery store" for local wildlife has disappeared. As our cities expand and homes are renovated, life becomes increasingly comfortable for us. But whose homes have been taken away in the process? And in the quiet nights outside our warm, bustling house parties, whose presence has silently disappeared? We would like to promote native plants and increase community members' awareness of wildlife habitats in their home landscapes. We hope to build an environment that benefits both humans and wildlife, making both happy and healthy.

Our Plan

This project is an extension of my previous project Settling Down with New Roots. Throughout the previous experience, I found most plant enthusiasts are older people. We want to find an engaging activity to attract young people’s attention on the concept of native plants and encourage them to learn the benefits of planting native plants on the environment and wildlife habitats. This summer, we plan to organize a hybrid hackathon centered on native plants. It will be open to participants both in person and online, making it accessible to a wider audience. We will invite youth locally and nationwide to design and submit educational games to show their understanding of native plant concepts.
