The Problem
Our wish for this project is to greatly reduce or eliminate the use of single use plastic "sporks" on our school's campus.
Our wish for this project is to greatly reduce or eliminate the use of single use plastic "sporks" on our school's campus.
The students of the EarthSavers club identified the use of single use plastic utensils during breakfast and lunch as an issue that needs to be addressed. The school distributes over 400-utensil packets everyday, which end up in the landfill or become trash on our campus. Our students want to develop a campaign that educates the school community about alternatives to single use plastic and why using less is important. They would also like to create a program that provides reusable utensils to students. Students would like to see a reduction of at least 80% of the use of the utensil packets. This data can be collected from the cafeteria manager. Fund raising and our Roots and Shoots mini-grant will provide the funds needed to start a pilot program that will provide reusable utensils to the students in 3-6 homeroom classes. These students would be given a before and after survey to collect information on the viability of the program that can be presented to school and district administrators.
