The Problem

BlueSTEM AgriLearning Center (BALC) is a STEM education center that services local rural public schools and community colleges. We provide STEM programming for K-12 students, undergraduate students, graduate students and professional development opportunities for teachers. We are located on a USDA research facility that is almost 8,000 acres. It is also a registered historical site (Historic Fort Reno) that has two museums (Fort Reno and the U.S. Cavalry museum). We have three El Reno Public School high school classes that are run out of BALC. Through these classes we are implementing a site wide recycling program in which we recycle paper, plastic, metal, glass, light bulbs, and batteries. As a community service project, students will pick up the recyclables and deliver it to our local recycling center. This involves pick up from five buildings on site. We also have very large community events that generate a lot of trash. We would like to supply designated recycling receptacles for these events.

Our Plan

Our students will begin by visiting each building and asking the building managers about the best recycling practices that would fit into each respective site. The students will then write a recycling and logistic proposal for each building. Once a plan is in place, we would like to purchase designated recycling receptacles for the buildings on site as well as for events. This would ensure that the recycling will get sorted properly and can easily be delivered to the recycling center. We plan to weigh the plastics, glass, paper, metal, light bulbs and batteries before delivering it to the recycling center. We plan to use the measurements as a teaching tool and to make comparisons from month to month and year to year.
