The Problem

Students read! Surveys show that 99% of the students who have completed reading activities say they didn’t realize reading could be so fun. The goal is to increase reading proficiency in K-5 students. 47% of children in Duval County are not ready for Kindergarten. 49% of Duval County students cannot read at the minimum level after third grade. Early intervention and individualized attention give students the best likelihood of success at reading.

Our Plan

Once a week students from the National Honor Society at a local high school will go over and complete guided reading for students who are in the bottom quartile group at a local elementary school. Guided reading is small-group reading instruction designed to provide differentiated teaching that supports students in developing reading proficiency'. The small group model allows students to be taught in a way that is intended to be more focused on their specific needs, accelerating their progress.
