The Problem

Plastic pollution is a big problem for our shores and sea creatures, contributing to 80% of marine debris. In South Florida, the 2023 Coastal Cleanup event gathered more than 32,000 pieces of trash, weighing almost 4,300 pounds, with a significant portion being plastic. Notably, our students transformed some of this ocean trash into art. The clean up challenge is larger than our backyard, but our students are committed to advocate and make a difference. As part of the SEA LAB community they use the power of art to advocate for cleaner oceans by educating the public on single use plastic and how to make a change!

Our Plan

Our students will create a pop-up mural named "Printed Oceans" using found object printmaking, a process that transforms ocean trash into treasure. They will use materials collected from beach cleanups or from their own homes, gathering items typically considered disposable. Through this artwork, they will vividly narrate the story of our oceans and underscore the significance of making better choices, especially when it comes to addressing the issue of single-use plastic waste.
