The Problem

Low income community members need to receive continuous food resources to help them save money and learn about what they can do to practice sustainability.

Our Plan

We will provide painted and recycled pots with herb seeds so that people get to grow some of their own ingredients while doing their part to support our environment.

Here is how the project went:

We were able to distribute about 150 pots throughout four months. We had between 60 to 25 pots available at each distribution and we were able to provide some information through a QR code that led to a plant guide. People were interested in taking home the seeds each time and some individuals got to learn something about growing their herbs.

Through this project I/we learned:

Through this project we learned that people appreciate additional resources, but they also need information on how they can maintain sustainability. The hands on experience, like growing a plant, is also not enjoyable for everyone, which shows us why people rely on certain resources so much.

What I/we might change:

Something we can change is to use different kinds of recycled items as pots and focus on growing herb sprouts to give out instead of just seeds. I would also like to emphasize plant care better to those who don't think they can grow their own seeds.

My/our favorite part of this project was:

My favorite part of this project was being able to hear people's experience with their herbs. They would update me about their seeds sprouting or ask why nothing was happening to their seeds. I also enjoyed hearing all the compliments about the paintings on the pots because it was a sign that the scholar's hard work made a difference in someone's day.

Some tips, tricks or fun facts about the project:

A fun fact is that I am now able to recognize regular attendees of the produce distributions. I remember their comments and updates, which has allowed me to create a new connection with the people in my community.
