The Problem

Our project is designed to engage students, families, and the school community in learning about how to garden in the Sonoran Desert, Tucson, AZ. We are going to explore hugelkultur, mound green matter composting, in our existing gardens. We are also interested in growing herbs and plants in a tower garden designed out of existing bricks from the original Drachman Elementary School from the early 1900's.

Our Plan

Students will research hugelkultur and permaculture methods, visit other gardens, and create a sustainable model for disposing the green matter from our existing school garden. We will also explore and design tower gardens that will use (upcycle) our existing bricks that were removed from the original Drachman Elementary School when the new Elementary was built almost 20 years ago. The bricks were salvaged and saved for future school projects and historic purposes.
