The Problem
Our goal is to help ensure that pets in shelters are adopted by families who will provide them a long happy life in a safe forever home. We have partnered with our local animal shelter to achieve our goal.
Our goal is to help ensure that pets in shelters are adopted by families who will provide them a long happy life in a safe forever home. We have partnered with our local animal shelter to achieve our goal.
We have taken four actions to help achieve our goal. Pennies for Paws is a competition between Hillside's 5th and 6th graders. Whichever grade donates the most money, in pennies gets their choice music during their lunch period for a week. Any other coin values are subtracted from the total points earned by the grade level. This year more than $400 was raised from the competition. We also have an event called The Community Connection Collections. Our students donate items that are on a provided list from the Somerset County Animal Shelter. At the end of the collection, the class with the most donations earns a pizza party. This year more than 1200 items were collected for the shelter. We also made toys out of empty paper towel and toilet paper rolls for the animals during Martin Luther King, Jr Day of Service. Finally at our annual Forest Fest, we invited the Animal Shelter to come in with shelter pets for adoption. At our last Forest Fest, we had both dogs and cats who were able to find forever homes.
