The Problem

We have a small but beautiful walking bridge covered stream on our campus that connects our high school to the middle school behind us. My current AP Environmental Science classes want to construct an Outdoor Classroom in this area that can be used by any teacher from either building! I was fortunate enough to win a small, local grant with which I purchased a class set of lightweight, snap together benches. We now need work surfaces!! The students would like to construct weather-proof, wooden work tables between three trees. Students could stand at the work tables while others sit on the benches in front of them. Having these tables would make it easier for students to collect/record data, examine specimens, etc.

Our Plan

My students and I would work with our Technology/Construction staff in the design and construction of two wooden work tables that would be built between three trees. Students would be responsible for all of the work....from researching designs, what type of wood will be needed, to the actual construction of the work tables!
