The Problem
To teach students about planting, growing, and harvesting nutrient rich produce for donation to a local food pantry.
To teach students about planting, growing, and harvesting nutrient rich produce for donation to a local food pantry.
This project begins at the start of the school year. Students plant seedlings in our garden for Kale, Collard Greens, Various herbs, and tomatoes. Students care for the garden by weeding and watering when needed, harvesting the produce, and donating to Boca Helping Hands (a local food pantry in Boca Raton, FL). So far this year we have harvested 159 lbs for donation. This produce is either used in the preparation of meals for clients or used as part of the grocery bag program. In this program, clients are given a brown paper grocery bag full of nutritious food options.
