Helping the bird on our community thrive in our urban ecosystem.
Operation Feathered Friends is the name of the project. The students are excited to create an awareness campaign about birds in our city and how to protect our feathered friends. Below is a list of how they to help wildlife and inform the community. 1. Build Bird Feeders: Design and construct a bird feeders using recycled materials from our school. Students will monitor the feeder and record observations of bird species and behaviors. 2. Create a Wildlife Habitat Garden: Students will plant native plants that attract birds, butterflies, and other wildlife. They will learn about the importance of biodiversity and ecosystem health. Students will the garden throughout the year, removing invasive species and adding new plants. 3. Conduct a Bird Survey: Students will learn about bird identification skills and use binoculars to observe local birds. Conduct a bird survey on school grounds. Record observations and submit data to a citizen science project using ebird: https://ebird.org/home 4. Educate the School Community and Neighborhood Community Students will create informative posters and presentations about raptors and other birds that will be shared with the school community and our neighborhood community. This will be through social media, visual signs, school town halls, and fun school wide activities. Students will educate about threats to local wildlife, such as habitat loss, pollution, and climate change. 5. Visit and volunteer at the U of M Raptor Center Students will get the opportunity to learn about injured wildlife and what they can to help with this trip. By working together, Operation Feathered Friends can make a significant impact on wildlife conservation for our school and local community.
