The Problem
In 2020, New Jersey generated about 21 million tons of solid waste. Trash is piling up more than we can handle and we need creative ways to raise awareness and to quicken the process of cleaning up the mess we have made. This Roots and Shoots project is the exact way to do that, Hillside students will collect trash from their backyard or wherever they can find it and reproduce it into extravagant art pieces. Their creative and innovative talents will showcase to the community the substantial impact our trash has on the environment. Any student can submit their inspirational artwork to be displayed and judged by three Hillside science teachers to win an unconfirmed prize for their acts of advocacies. The judges will be looking for which art piece shows the greatest impact of pollution to illuminate the students and staff marveling at the wondrous creations. They will be permitted to use clean waste found by them along with packs of supplies given by us to form their masterpieces. Their ingenuity will spread throughout the school bringing light to the reality of the importance of waste pollution
