The Problem
I want to alleviate food insecurity in my school system and in my community.
Our Plan
We created the Oasis Community Garden with support from Cape Coral Kiwanis in 8 years ago. Since then, we have had positive results and setbacks from COVID-19 and Hurricanes Ian and Milton causing flooding. We continue to build back and expand our plantings of fruits and vegetables to benefit those who lack access to fresh produce. We also donate our crops to the city's only food pantry, the Cape Caring Center.

Here is how the project went:
The garden has been coming back very well. Fortunately, it has been a quiet hurricane season, and we had great crops of tomatoes, potatoes, and star fruit this year which we donated to the Cape Caring Center.
Through this project I/we learned:
We learned that we need dedicated volunteers during all times of the year. Our irrigation system has really helped, but the Florida sun is brutal. We need to beat the wildlife to the crops as well and harvest them quickly.
What I/we might change:
We would like to plant other vegetables such as peppers and some orange trees as those should grow well in our climate.
My/our favorite part of this project was:
Our favorite part was donating the thousands of pounds of harvested food to our local food pantry.
Some tips, tricks or fun facts about the project:
Make sure you bring lots of water and wear old clothes to make sure that you don't get sunburned or dizzy when working on the plants and trees.
