The Problem

Our Urban Greenhouse Club is continuing to improve the school environment by planting Indiana Native plants in the courtyard. This project is beginning to make a significant difference to the biodiversity of the school. Pollinators and butterflies are being attracted to the urban environment, creating a positive impact on the daily lives of the students. This project is bringing environmental awareness to middle school children and allowing students to experience nature that they might not be exposed to in their own homes. By providing this project it is educating the students about native plants to take that knowledge and use it in their daily lives. In our spring project, we would love to extend the planting of the native flowers and bring more biodiversity to the school environment. Additional planting will also bring further learning experiences for the children. Children are encouraged to be active members of the school club by selecting, planting and caring for native species, we also have a partnership with Sycamore Land Trust which gives the children opportunities to speak and interact with knowledgeable environmentalists. Students are also able to transfer knowledge from the projects and apply and extend to their real life experiences. Many students grow starter plants from the original plant seeds in the greenhouse and transfer the plants in the summer to their own gardens at home.

Our Plan

We would like to buy 40-50 native plants in the spring from an Indiana Native supplier. This would allow us to directly plant in the area to be extended. We have removed non-native species from the courtyard this Fall in preparation for planting native species in the spring.

Here is how the project went:

This year, we embarked on an exciting journey to enhance our Indiana Native Wildflower area in the school courtyard. Our efforts included replacing some Little Blue Stem that didn't make it through the winter and expanding the vibrant border. We introduced a variety of new species, such as Spotted Bee Balm, Rose Milkweed, and Butterfly Milkweed, all with the goal of supporting our beloved Monarch butterflies. Additionally, we planted some school favorites: Lance Leaf Coreopsis, Wild Bergamot, Showy Goldenrod, and Purple Coneflower, ensuring a stunning array of colors will brighten the courtyard. As these young seedlings took root, our dedicated students mulched the area to safeguard them during the hot Indiana summer. But the courtyard is more than just a garden—it's become a central hub for learning and conservation. As part of a class project, we raised butterflies and released them into our wildflower sanctuary. This hands-on experience has deeply engaged our students, giving them a tangible connection to environmental issues. We are buzzing with excitement to see this living masterpiece in full bloom when we return to school in August, and we can't wait for the courtyard to continue inspiring and educating our school community!

Through this project I/we learned:

We learned how pollinators need native wildflowers as habitats. We also learned the names of various wildflowers and how to plant them. We raised butterflies and watched them grow through each part of their life cycle before we released them to nature.

What I/we might change:

The species of wildflowers that we planted.

My/our favorite part of this project was:

Seeing the vibrant display of native flowers.

Some tips, tricks or fun facts about the project:

Monarch butterflies are depleting due to the lack of milkweed. Milkweed is not only beautiful when it flowers it is also providing the necessary habitat for pollinators. Once you plant wildflowers you can collect the seeds to replant.
