Every day animals are harmed by vehicles on the road. Even the biggest animals can be killed or harmed. Some populations of animals are going down and they can become endangered. We love animals and want to help them move around their habitats more safely.
There are certain places where wild animals cross the road to find water or food or places to hide or find mates or give birth or hatch their eggs. If people know about these places on the road, they can slow down their cars and keep the animals safe. We will find these places and put colorful signs to remind people to slow down and share the road with wild animal friends. Their lives matter! We are now in progress on our project. Here is our update so far: We decided to do this project because we see a lot of wildlife crossing the road in our rural community and people drive too fast. We saw animals hurt or killed on the road and wanted to help them. We wanted to make signs that people would pay attention to so we hand painted them on wood with bright beautiful colors and designs and put them in places where we know animals cross the road. We hosted small group project days and talked about our favorite animals and how to help keep them safe. I shared my passion for helping animals and I think I inspired my friends to take action. I think the kids and grown ups that helped make the signs were happy that they were helping animals and I think that people are seeing the signs and might be driving slower. We talked to the neighbors and other people in our community where we put the signs and everyone was supportive of the project and I think it made them think about how driving slower and paying more attention to animal habitat is a way to help animals and help the environment. We want to make a lot more signs and put them in more places in our town and in the other towns nearby. We had to change the way we made the signs until we got the right design and now we are happy with them. I really enjoyed making the signs with my family and friends and I hope more animals will be safe.
