The Problem

Oscar, the therapy cat for the children’s unit in the Austin State Hospital, has recently passed away. Oscar was beloved by both staff and patients, and we aim to commemerate the togetherness he brought to the community. Because the hospital no longer has access to art tharapists, and many parts of the playground had to be removed, hopefully the mural will inspire creativity and encourage participation in the community garden.

Our Plan

paint the design on 6x9 plexiglass panels, which will be installed in the entranc of the children’s unit. The matirials will be scourced by Austin State Hospital.

Here is how the project went:

I recently had the unveiling ceremony at the hospital, and It felt like my work paid off seeing that the patients and staff appriciated the mural, and that it brought joy to their day.

Through this project I/we learned:

I learned how to better communicate with people, and also how to do art under a deadline/ for an organization.

What I/we might change:

I ended up having to wait on a confirmed design, and in the meantime I wasted a lot of time and effort trying to prematurely make a design, when all of the elements were not yet confirmed.

My/our favorite part of this project was:

One of the kids made a drawing of oscar for me, which I really appreciated

Some tips, tricks or fun facts about the project:

Patience is really important when dealing with the texas government, and complying with HIPAA. For anyone making a mural, especially in my case with a constantly changing deadline, make sure to manage time well.
