The Problem
The Milagro Detroit Garden addresses the lack of green space in a Detroit neighborhood where our family has history. We're transforming twelve vacant lots at 4368-4302 Philip Street via the Detroit Land Bank Authority's "Thoughtful Land-Based Project" initiative, which lets community members repurpose vacant lots for productive, community-focused activities. In this particular area, there are many vacant/abandoned homes and vacant plots of land. We want to help change this.
Our Plan
We'll plant flowering trees, perennials, and bushes that are beautiful, native and low maintenance. Lunaris (7 years old) and Cameron (9 years old) created their own garden plans and will lead the planting. Our whole family is helping this summer (June through August), and we're inviting neighbors and any and all volunteers to participate too! The garden provides green space and a gathering place. In phase 2, we hope to add vegetable beds and beekeeping. Our brother-in-law's tractor and Keep Growing Detroit's free tools and woodchips make this feasible. This project teaches young people that they have the power to improve a community.
