The Problem

We have decided to start composting our food waste on campus to reduce the amount of waste going to landfills and to provide compost for our school garden. We want our students to understand how throwing away food scraps is wasting both space in landfills and nutrients that can be used in our garden. This project will demonstrate biological processes that kids can see, participate in, and learn from.

Our Plan

Students will construct a composting station that educates students on what is compostable and what is not. We will have a design competition in the middle school to encourage students to get involved in the process. In addition, students will also present to the school community the importance of our composting program and how composting will be done on campus. Each compost station will have a student volunteer who will help kids learn which items can be composted and then the buckets of compost will be taken to the school garden.
