The Problem
I am an advisor of our Magnolia Middle School Eco-Team. It is a non funded after school club with a group of students that wish to create an environmentally safe school community. Our goal is to create a small community garden to promote healthy eating and healthy living within our school climate. This grant would provide the opportunity for students to start a garden from scratch and educate the community and the student body on the valuable lesson of growing and nurturing your own food. Many of our students do not live in areas where a garden is sustainable, our goal would provide students access to fresh, healthy vegetables and fruits to take home, all while having an invaluable learning experience. I have had success at a previous workplace with starting a community garden and having students tend to their garden through weekly club meetings. This creates a responsibility on students and they place a value on their hard work and ethic. This Eco-Team is equitable for all students and provides an environment of notices and wonders for all to learn. The students life experience is a vital part of this organization.
