The Problem

Our newest Earth Rangers want to take last June's culminating project a step further as they start 5th grade this year. For a week last June they held a school-wide No Straw Challenge. They want to make a dent in the amount of plastic trash our community is responsble for. Long Island has beautiful ocean beaches although we are not a waterfront community. In our Town, all our trash is burned. This group of Earth Rangers would like to see most people in our community stop using plastic straws.

Our Plan

These young people intend to hold another school-wide No Straw Challenge, hoping it will be for 30 days instead of just a week. They want to make glass straws available for students--perhaps as prizes for the class that does the best in stopping the use of plastic straws and also as prize choices for students who earn "MLK Bucks" as part of a positive behavioral initiative. In addition, they want to reach out to local restaurants to ask them to stop automatically giving patrons plastic straws. These awesome youngsters are quite serious about making an impact.
