The Problem
According to the Center for Food Action, one in every 10 New Jersey residents is food insecure, meaning they do not have an adequate, consistent supply of food. This affects young children, senior citizens, and many families in our local community. For this reason, our campaign will focus on providing members of our community with fresh vegetables and herbs raised in our aquaponic garden. Our Roots & Shoots leadership team recognizes the transformative power of service learning opportunities. We have partnered with our local food pantry to deepen our impact on our community and empower or students view themselves as agents of positive change. Leaders in the Field: Roots and Shoots members will work collaboratively to plant and harvest vegetables and herbs in our aquaponic garden. Student gardeners will discuss the history of aquaculture, examine the differences between aquaponic and hydroponic farming, and investigate how aquaponic gardening may be the key to a more sustainable future. Crops from our micro-farm will be donated to our local food pantry to help those in need.
