The Problem

The Buddy Bench helps kids who feel lonely or left out during recess. It gives them a place to sit so others know they need a friend to play with. This makes the playground more friendly and helps everyone feel included and happy.

Our Plan

At my school, sometimes kids feel left out at recess or don’t have anyone to play with, and that makes them sad. I want to bring a Buddy Bench to my school so kids know they have a place to go if they need a friend. The bench will help everyone feel included and happy, and it will be made out of recycled plastic caps and lids, so it’s good for the environment too! When I was five, I helped my brother put Buddy Benches at his school and in the park. It was so much fun, and I always wanted to do one on my own. Now, I’m ready to lead this project myself and make my school a kinder place. To make it happen, my family, friends, and I will collect plastic caps and lids from our community. We’ll clean and sort them before sending them to Sammie’s Buddy Bench project to make the bench. Once it’s done, we’ll place the bench on our playground and teach everyone how to use it. I want every kid to know it’s a special place where they can make new friends. My friends will help me talk to classmates about collecting caps and how the Buddy Bench works. People in our community can help by donating plastic caps and supporting the project. With the Roots & Shoots grant, I can make this idea real and help my school be a kinder and more fun place for everyone!
