The Problem

Our goal is to promote literacy and reading which we've begun through a virtual reading room for children in grades K-3rd.

Our Plan

Over 8 days, the 8 members of our group read a book online to children who logged into our virtual reading room. After reading their chosen book, each member conducted a question and answer session for the children. Our virtual reading room was a success by our measurement. The goal of our campaign was to reach just one child. Over the course of the 8 day project, we recorded 113 attendees in our virtual reading room. Some children attended multiple nights. Our marketing campaign also promoted a book donation to the East St. Louis Delta Child Development Center for every 10 participants. We'd like to foster an ongoing relationship with the center to provide additional virtual as well as live and pre-recorded book readings to the children they serve.

Here is how the project went:

We started this project as part of a challenge. As we developed it, it became a mission.

Through this project I/we learned:

Through this project, we learned it doesn't take a lot to make a difference. Simply reading a book to a child was as rewarding to us as it was to the children, and we stepped out of quiet corners to sit middle stage for the cause of helping someone else.

What I/we might change:

Reading two books per day. Asking the audience questions. Providing a certificate to those who attend.

My/our favorite part of this project was:

Being able to interact with the children and seeing how happy they were to have us read to them.

Some tips, tricks or fun facts about the project:

Choose age relative books for your audience. We chose K - 3rd graders, and our book choices seem to work for that grade range. Older kids might not have wanted to hear the books we read.
