The Problem

we are hoping that we will receive enough money to buy school supplies for all the kids that live in the Island Walk community. We are applying for this grant because Island Walk is a low-income community and the people in this community can not afford to buy all the supplies needed for the school year. There are approximately 125 school aged children that we will be providing supplies for.

Our Plan

Island Walk is an affordable housing complex in Northern Virginia. The residents of the property are a close community in general but low-income neighborhoods are more often susceptible to less attention, which can mean less funds. With this funding, we will be able to take the time to ensure that the residents will get backpacks with some school supplies in them. To accomplish our goals, we will be using youth volunteers that live on-site. These volunteers have gone through an application and orientation process by the non-profit that owns Island Walk (CPDC). As a group, they will hold events and post signs around the property to encourage people to come out to the events. The youth volunteers will also translate flyers and other information into other languages to ensure the adults also understand this initiative as well.
