The Problem

The problem being addressed is that our local food pantry often receives donations of food items that do not align with the cultural diversity of our community and the people using the food pantry. Based on working with the food pantry before, we observe that donations often include low quality food and highly processed food. These items also don’t necessarily align with the food pantry’s food needs. It’s important for the food pantry to have a variety of healthy and culturally diverse food to better serve the people who rely on it. This also aligns with the principles of food sovereignty. This could also benefit our community as a whole because this would spread more cultural awareness and introduce people to the importance of having healthy, culturally diverse, and high quality food donations.

Our Plan

We are planning these actions: 1. Create diverse pantry packs: Purchase culturally important staple items that are rarely donated: examples- spices, specialty grains, or culturally specific oils and sauces like soy sauce or hot sauce. Focus on items costing less than $2 each to maximize the number of people served. 2. Youth-Led Awareness Campaign: Create educational posters or suggested shopping lists for food pantry donors. 3. Community Engagement & Logistics: Provide feedback forms or a survey for those who use the food pantry to help us learn about their food preferences.
