The Problem
The Farm Bill is the most significant legislation in the U.S. government that funds the agricultural system, and it currently only has 1% of the budget allocated for regenerative practices. Agriculture is one of the biggest drivers of climate change, producing almost half of the world's methane emissions, but it could be one the biggest solutions to the climate crisis, if we prioritize soil health through regenerative agricultural practices.
Our Plan
This project aims to make individuals and families more aware of how to support regenerative agriculture in their day to day lives, through an illustrated recipe zine and quick guide to food labels. The zine will begin with an engaging introduction to carbon sequestration and the power of healthy soil, and will then share plant-based or locally-sourced recipes from members of the Roots and Shoots community in many locations. The project will blend creativity, science, and cooking to give readers a personal, unique, and interactive learning tool to begin or continue their journey as a healthy soil advocate. The zine will also be a resource for my existing "healthy soil challenge," which is a broader and more in-depth interactive set of activities surrounding regenerative agriculture's role in slowing and potentially reversing the effects of human-induced climate change.
