The Problem

Our Roots & Shoots group is made up of 5 to 7 year old children and their parents. This year we are focusing on the theme of soil and water health in our local community, which is located just north of Washington, D.C. and is part of the Anacostia regional watershed. Our goal is to teach our scouts the importance of protecting area soil and water health, as well as to provide them with ways to ensure the vitality of our local ecosystems.

Our Plan

We will focus on both learning and action in our group events this year. The learning component will include (1) consumption, waste, and reduce/reuse/recycle, (2) local food production and soil health, and (3) regional watershed protection and conservation. The action component will include (1) neighborhood debris clean-up and recycling, and (2) regional clean-up and conservation on learning trips to area ecosystems.
