The Problem
Our students are fortunate to be provided with a wide variety of knowledge focused on academics and social/emotional learning. One area we want to improve on is providing our students with education focused on our earth and ways to take care of it.
Our Plan
Hornell Intermediate School is planning to construct a school garden for grades 2nd through 6th. This is a wonderful opportunity, encouraging children to connect with our natural environment, as so many turn to electronic devices and other forms of technology today. This is also a chance for children to learn the numerous benefits of cooperation as they work toward a common goal. In this case, growing plants to provide healthy food choices is essential to both a child’s mental and physical well-being. The experience of growing one’s own food is a wonderful opportunity for children to take pride in what they have helped create. Our goal is to “plant seeds” within the lives of our children, who may not have the opportunity to take part in such an amazing experience as creating, tending to, and gracefully receiving from a garden. This garden project will help our students be responsible, respectful, and safe which is our great school motto!
