The Problem
Accessibility to middle school books that are high interest while encouraging a sharing philosophy when it comes to books and literacy. This project is designed to benefit all students and community members by providing free access to books regardless of income level, background, or reading ability. We also hope to include books that reflect diverse cultures, identities, languages, and life experiences so students can both see themselves represented and learn about others. The project will encourage families to share and reuse books instead of throwing them away or constantly purchasing new ones, reducing waste while promoting literacy and community connection.
Our Plan
Our project idea is to create a student-supported Little Free Library in front of Sandburg Middle School through our Spartan Garden elective program. Sandburg is a Title I school, and many of our students do not have the ability to regularly purchase new books. We also noticed that the closest Little Free Library is several blocks away at an elementary school and mainly contains books for younger children. In addition, there are very few Little Free Libraries located west of our community, limiting access for many local families and transfer students. Students will help install and maintain a Little Free Library with a bench and flower box to create a welcoming community reading space. The project will encourage families to share and reuse books instead of throwing them away or constantly purchasing new ones, reducing waste while promoting literacy and community connection. The flower box will support pollinators and beautify our campus entrance for students and visitors.
