The Problem
Our community struggles with food insecurity. Many of our local families don't have access to fresh produce. Our "Green Up JC" initiative will allow our students to grow fresh vegetables for our Wildcat Food and Clothing Center to distribute to families in need. Our garden project will educate our students and provide them with the knowledge to grow their own gardens through sustainable and organic practices. Our hope is that these students will use this experience and apply it to help our local community and environment in the future.
Our Plan
Our gardens need revitalization. The students will be hands on repairing the existing garden beds and constructing new beds, planning the planting schedule and crops to be grown, and growing and maintaining vegetables from seed in our gardens. They will harvest the crops, and deliver the produce to the food pantry. Sustainable and organic gardening practices will be implemented such as companion plantings to help minimize pests organically. We will be adding many varieties of pollinator crops throughout the growing season, and producing our own compost. Succession planting will help maximize our yield for the space we have.
