Here is how the project went:
We continued to build on our butterfly and pollinator raised garden beds. There was much success with observing monarch caterpillars and chrysalis'. We also continued building on our other raised garden beds with growing vegetables and native plants. Our vermicomposting bins continue to supply our gardens with healthy fertilizer while simultaneously keeping organic food waste out of the landfills which is harmful to our environment. Our beach clean ups are always a favorite for our community service volunteers.
Through this project I/we learned:
It is better to use reusable gloves and buckets for our clean ups which help keep plastic gloves and plastic trash bags out of the landfills. We also started to use a scale to weigh the amount of trash we collect.
What I/we might change:
Next year we will continue to use a scale and weigh the amount of trash we collect and compare to this years total. We would also like to implement a bit of education at our beach clean ups for our volunteers.
My/our favorite part of this project was:
When we got together to produce a "Tag the World" video to share on the Jane Goodall Institute Global Instagram. It was amazing to know we connect with other R & S groups around the world!
Some tips, tricks or fun facts about the project:
Upcycling plastic buckets that hold flowers at grocery stores into reusable buckets to collect our trash. We just drilled holes on either side of the bucket and tied rope to each end creating a handle. Also weighing the trash each volunteer collects adds a fun competitive aspect to our clean ups. We can also use this data to compare to next year and evaluate our success.
