The Problem

The problem that our group has chosen to address is food insecurity. Last year our school started a backpacks program to feed hungry families in our school. For that program, students can take home a backpack full of food at the end of each week and then return the backpack the next week. The problem is that the backpacks mostly contain processes food, and do not contain fresh fruits and vegetables. We have learned that access to fresh produce is a big part of food security because it gives people healthy and nutritious food. Our campaign will add fresh produce to the backpack program to help with the problem of food insecurity here in the school community.

Our Plan

We will purchase low cost fresh fruits and vegetables to place in the backpacks. We would like to create a short presentation to show others in the school about our campaign. We will also use videos to record our reflections on the campaign so as we go along, and to get ideas from other students.

Here is how the project went:

Overall it went well. The pandemic made us have to make some changes to our original plan, but we still were able to buy produce to address food insecurity.

Through this project I/we learned:

We learned that even when faced with a big (global) challenge, there are still ways to integrate fresh produce into food security actions.

What I/we might change:

We would focus more on buying organic and sustainable foods as opposed to just fresh produce.

My/our favorite part of this project was:

Packing the backpacks

Some tips, tricks or fun facts about the project:

With a little creative thinking, you can make sure that efforts to address food insecurity can be sustainable by buying from local co-ops, farmers, or by buying organic foods.
